Pitzu ‘e Cuccu
It is a characteristic point along the line where, in order to quickly go up in level, the railway passes over itself, presenting again the same panorama but from a higher altitude. In this part of the line it is as if the Trenino Verde wanted to reveal to its travelers, from different points of view, the surrounding landscape.
Arzana
The station, a few kilometers from the town, is a point of welcome and refreshment for travelers.
Arzana rises on the south-eastern slope of Monte Idolo, among chestnut and oak woods and in its surroundings there are some very well-preserved nuraghi. In its vast territory there is also the highest peak of the island: Punta La Marmora, with its 1834 meters.
Villagrande
A few kilometers from the Station, the mountain village of Villagrande Strisaili rises on a relief just after the wood of Santa Barbara, on the border between the geographical region of Barbagia and that of Ogliastra.
Leaning against barren cliffs, from this pretty village it is possible to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views characterized by the sea in the distance and, closer to the town, by the great green expanses of the woods.
Gairo Taquisara
The terminus of the journey is in the hamlet of Gairo Taquisara, 6 km from Gairo Vecchio, a ghost town abandoned in 1951 after a great flood that hit the area.
Visiting Gairo Vecchio today means to take a step back in time, walking in its streets among deserted houses and buildings, whose history is summarized in many explanatory signs at the base of the buildings.
From Gairo Taquisara departed also another railway line of 7 km to Jerzu, dismantled in 1956. A railway station of that trunk, that of Ulassai, has been recovered and transformed in the “Station of the Art”, a museum of contemporary art dedicated to the famous artist of international fame Maria Lai.
